Hardwood Floor Caulking: How To Do It

Caulking is a word used to define a very old technique applied mainly to wooden ships.

To caulk is to fill, wedge an empty space between (in this case) the various boards that made up the hull of a vessel; seal gaps, do not allow water to pass through using putty or another effective product such as burlap, rope, pitch, rags, etc.

It also means to cover, fill, seal, etc.

There are several types of specific materials for caulk; therefore, when buying the material, it is necessary to tell the salesperson at the store where and how you intend to use it.

Ceramic, metal, or glass caulk will not work well on wood, for example.

In our case, hardwood or parquet flooring has to be caulked so as not to have spaces between the pieces and to avoid the accumulation of dust, microorganisms or insects, in addition to allowing for much easier cleaning.

The caulking also gives the floor a natural finish, enhancing the original characteristics of the woods, such as veins, knots, nuances of tones.

Materials Needed to Caulk Hardwood Floors

damp cloth;

Sandpaper;

Spatula or trowel;

Caulking dough. Here it is important to pay attention and choose a specific putty for wood. Caulking putty can also be purchased in the desired color: the brand Viapol supplies several colors.

Caulking can be done on site, with sawdust purchased from a carpentry shop, more white glue, a few drops of vinegar to prevent darkening, and pigment to match the color of the floor (if necessary).

Mix the sawdust well with the glue until you get a homogeneous, easy-to-work mass. Then just apply.

PU glue is also used a lot with sawdust.

When the grout of the blocks comes loose, we must proceed with the caulking of the joints.

However, you should not caulk only the damaged section, as this can make the floor uneven.

The process must be done in stages:

The floor is sanded, using two types of sandpaper (nº 16 and 36);

Next, clean all sanding dirt with a damp cloth;

The blocks are caulked with a special paste for this purpose, sold in paint and construction houses;

The color of the putty must match the color of the wood;

Once the caulking is finished, the floor must be sanded again in two stages, with sandpaper nº 60 and 80. Apply varnish for finishing wooden floors.
